Cat5e
Category 5 was ratified as a standard in the 1990s. It specified test criteria at set signalling frequencies up to 100 MHz. This is more than adequate for the widely used transmission application, Fast Ethernet, which delivers 100Mbits/sec.
In the late 1990s a more comprehensive set of test criteria was proposed in order to deliver a higher performance solution. One feature of the new test included signalling frequencies up to 250MHz. This was sufficient to handle the emerging Gigabit Ethernet technology.
These test criteria formed the basis of Cat6. At the same time work was carried out to enhance the Cat5 standard and this became known as Cat5e.
